Abstract
This two-part book includes an academic text defended in the early 2000s (part 1) and a more recent article that updates the discussion on social inclusion (part 2)
Part 1: This study highlights the social role of museums in museological practice, based on two specific and diverse realities. On the one hand, by focusing on the social inclusion concept applied to the museum practice in the United Kingdom, through the analysis of the literature produced about the subject in the beginning of the 21st century. On the other hand, by understanding the social role of museums as theorised and practised in Brazil, through the analysis of three case studies from the mid-1990s on. From the study of these two perspectives, comparisons between them are built, the differences are put into context, and hypotheses relating to the understanding of the variables are proposed. As a result, it’s seen how the social inclusion concept applied to museums has been developed in the United Kingdom, and what are the circumstances that led to its development and applicability. For the Brazilian case, the analysis of the case studies has led to a focus on the social role of museums as consonant to their educational role, and attempts to understand this particularity will be suggested.
Part 2: The text presents and problematizes different points of view regarding accessibility in museums. Usually understood as synonymous of actions aimed at people with disabilities, accessibility makes possible diverse approaches aimed at groups with access difficulties. It also discusses issues related to inclusion and audience development in museums and shares examples of accessibility projects of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, the Museo Nacional de Colombia and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Ce livre en deux parties comprend un texte académique défendu au début des années 2000 (partie 1) et un article plus récent qui met à jour la discussion sur l’inclusion sociale (partie 2)
Partie 1 : Cette étude met en évidence le rôle social des musées dans la pratique muséologique, à partir de deux réalités spécifiques et diverses. D’une part, en se focalisant sur le concept d’inclusion sociale appliqué à la pratique muséale au Royaume-Uni, Cette étude a été réalisée à travers l’analyse de la littérature produite sur le sujet au début du 21ème siècle. D’autre part, en comprenant le rôle social des musées tel que théorisé et pratiqué au Brésil, à travers l’analyse de trois études de cas depuis le milieu des années 1990. A partir de l’étude de ces deux perspectives, des comparaisons entre elles sont construites, les différences mises en contexte et des hypothèses relatives à la compréhension des variables sont proposées. On voit ainsi comment le concept d’inclusion sociale appliqué aux musées a été développé au Royaume-Uni, et quelles sont les circonstances qui ont conduit à son développement et à son applicabilité. Pour le cas brésilien, l’analyse des études de cas a conduit à un accent sur le rôle social des musées comme consonant à leur rôle éducatif, et des tentatives de compréhension de cette particularité seront suggérées.
Partie 2 : Le texte présente et problématise différents points de vue sur l’accessibilité dans les musées. Généralement comprise comme synonyme d’actions visant les personnes handicapées, l’accessibilité rend possibles des approches diverses destinées aux groupes ayant des difficultés d’accès. Il discute également des questions liées à l’inclusion et au développement du public dans les musées et donne des exemples de projets d’accessibilité de la Pinacoteca de São Paulo, le Musée national de la Colombie et le Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal.

Gabriela Aidar is the Head of the Inclusive Educational Programs at the Education Department of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, in Brazil. Lecturer at the Master’s degree in Museology and Heritage at the National University of Colombia. Graduated in History at Universidade de São Paulo (São Paulo University); Diploma in Art Museum Studies at Museu de Arte Contemporânea (Contemporary Art Museum) and in Museology at Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia (Archaeology and Ethnology Museum). Master of Arts in Museum Studies at Leicester University, UK.
